How can I preserve my cake and for how long?
Many of you wonder how to preserve their cake for as long as possible. Well, here are a few ideas:
1. If you covered your cake with fondant, put a saranwrap on it to avoid the fondant to dry and crack.
2. Always put the cake in the fridge!
3. If you used butercream to decorate your cake, plant toothpick on the top of the cake and cover it with saranwrap
4. If possible, try to keep the cake in a box
5. For a cheesecake, you only need to wrap it in saranwrap (thightly) on a regular plate
*All these ideas are provided in the sens of trying to limit the air access to the cake; to put it in an airtight environment.
To know for how long your cake will be good, you have to consider what you made it with.
1. A cake with fondant over it will stay good for easily up to 3-4 weeks (more depending on the way you keep it) (same here for almond dough)
2. A cheesecake will preserve itself for about 8-9 days at most
3. A buttercream covered cake will stay good for up to 3 weeks if well stored
4. Any cake covered with wipped cream, custard, cream cheese frosting, ganache, light cream, fruits or dairy-based frosting (except buttercream) will stay good for at most 5 days.
5. All mousses will stay good for about 2 weeks kept in the fridge and 4-5 weeks kept in the freezer. * Note that once you've put them out of the freezer, you cannot put them back in, you have to put them in the fridge and then the 2 weeks start.
